Our beloved jazz legend, piano virtuoso, forever shining guiding light on the journey of music...Chick Corea left this beautiful message for us:
“I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself, then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun. And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly—this has been the richness of my life.”
As if answering back to this message from Chick, Mika Stolzman and her producer Steve Gadd have gotten together with Chick’s dearest musician friends to make music to celebrate Chick and continue their journey with Chick’s spirit to keep the music fires burning bright.

Catalyst and Marimbist: Mika Stolzman
Through his journey, Chick loved and enjoyed sharing the joy of creating music with his precious friends, and many of them have participated in this album. Marimbist Mika Stolzman has been one of the closest friends of Chick, sharing Chick’s joy of creating music on the course of his musical journey.
Born in Amakusa Island, Kumamoto, Japan, Mika is an international marimbist, swaying elegantly between classical music and jazz. She now resides in Boston with her husband Richard Stolzman and has performed 10 times at Carnegie Hall (Zankel & Weill) and has toured 22 countries and 66 cities around the world.
Mika not only inspires many musicians with her beautiful marimba, but she is also a catalyst bonding artists and music with her endless uplifting spirit. This album was made possible because of her gift as a catalyst, connecting Chick’s dearest friends and sharing his spirit.

Sound of hope
When Mika first sent me the recording, I felt like I was being surrounded by Chick’s spirit, as if he were casting a huge smile at me, despite the fact that Chick was not on the recording on any of the songs (except the bonus track recorded in 1985). I felt a sense of hope, uplifting energy, that same kind of feeling I have always felt when listening to his music and words. I instantly realized that the music made in this album genuinely reflects the way how Chick always wanted to uplift and encourage other people through his music. As his beloved wife Gayle Moran Corea mentioned graciously in her message, Chick’s mission was to uplift and inspire others with his music.
This miracle album was only made possible because it was made with the pure and genuine hearts of Chick’s friends who have always shared his spirit along their journey with Chick.

Stories behind the songs
01: A few months before Chick left us, Mika recorded a solo version of “Armando’s Rhumba” and sent it to him. He told Mika that he really liked Takeshi Fuse’s arrangement, but this turned out to be the last musical communication between Chick and Mika.
02: “Crystal Silence” features Gayle Moran Corea’s divine angel voice, full of love and respect to her soulmate, accompanied by Mika’s marimba and Richard’s clarinet.
03: Mika’s first encounter with Chick was in Toronto, where she was studying as a student and happened to drop by to catch the show by Chick Corea and Origin. Chick was playing Marimba on “Wigwam.” After the show, Mika introduced herself and Chick told Mika that Marimba is his favorite instrument. Mika started dreaming about asking Chick to make a song for Marimba.
04: One day, when Mika was visiting Chick’s dressing room, Chick asked Mika to close her eyes. When she opened her eyes she found the score of “Children’s Song” in her hands. Chick advised her that these songs need no arrangements and it’s best to play them as it is written.
05: Chick’s band mate, John Patitucci composed “Chick’s Groove” as a dedication to Chick, especially for this album.
06: After celebrating Chick’s 70th birthday, Chick told Mika that he would write a song for her. The score arrived at Mika’s place on New Year’s Eve in 2011. Chick wrote this piece imagining Mika on Marimba, Steve on drums, Eddie on bass and Richard playing clarinet, which actually came true on this album.
07: “Birthday Song for Mika” is another tune composed for Mika by Chick to be premiered in the concert at Carnegie Hall which happened to take place on Chick’s birthday!
08: Gayle Moran Corea and her “Sister in Song” Karen Nelson Bell created a delicately beautiful yet powerful harmony incorporating their creative and uplifting spirit in the masterpiece “Spain”.
09: The final track “Japanese Waltz” is a very special recording by Chick and Richard at the festival “Music Joy” in Tokyo in 1985. Chick made this song while he was staying in Kyoto for 6 weeks with his family in 1983. Chick loved Japan and the Japanese people. We love you back so dearly and forever, Chick san!

Among his many magnificent and admirable qualities, Chick had a child-like beauty about him; he always wanted to learn and grow. He never thought of himself as being better than anybody else.
I was deeply honored to be lovingly by his side for 50 glorious years,💞 and had the privilege of both singing and playing in his bands.🎤🎹🙏🏼
I loved helping on so many creative adventures.🎶💞

【音楽の火を明るく灯し続けよう】

　2021年２月９日、音楽界は偉大なるレジェンド、チック・コリアを失った。チックは最後にこのようなメッセージを残してくれた。
　「私が旅の途中で出会い、音楽の火を明るく灯し続け るよう手助けしてくれたみなさんに感謝します。演奏したり、作曲したり、パフォーマンスや、他のことをしてみたいと感じている方がいたら、ぜひやってみてほしいと私は願っています。たとえそれが自分のためではなかったとしても、私たちのために。世界がより多くのアーティストを必要としているだけではなく、それは単にとても楽しいことだから。 そして、知り合ってからずっと私にとって家族のような存在でいてくれた、素晴らしいミュージシャンの友人達へ。あなたがたと一緒に演奏し、あなたがたから学ぶことができて本当に幸せで光栄でした。できる限りあらゆる場面で創作の喜びをもたらすことは、常に私のミッションでした。そして、それを私が心から親愛に思うすべてのアーティストたちとできたことこそ、私の人生の豊かさでした」
　このメッセージに呼応するかのように、ミカ・ストルツマンの声がけとスティーヴ・ガッドのプロデュースのもと、チックと「音楽の旅」をともにしてきた盟友たちが集った。チックにトリビュートし、チックのスピリッツと一緒に旅を続け、チックが望んだように音楽の火を明るく灯し続けるために。
　Eight Islands Records第３弾としてお届けするのが、本作『Spirit of Chick Corea』である。

【終わらないチック・コリアの旅】

　本レーベルのコンセプトのひとつが「アーティスト自身の『音楽探求の旅』の途上で生まれたさまざまな音楽をとりあげること」であるが、音楽家の人生は旅であるということを教えてくれたのもチックだ。
　チック・コリアは1941年生まれ。高校卒業後ニューヨークの音楽シーンで頭角を現し、アート・ブレイキー、スタン・ゲッツ、マイルス・デイヴィスらと共演。1966年にソロとしての活動を始めて以来、ジャズシーンの最前線を走り続け、ピアニストとして新しい境地を開拓し続けた。ストレート・アヘッド、アヴァンギャルド、ビバップ、フュージョンからクラシックまで、つねに最高峰のレベルで多彩な音楽活動をおこなった。
　チックの音楽家としての人生はどんなにスリリングで喜びに満ちたものだったのだろう。そしてその過程で、出会ったミュージシャン仲間をとても大切にし、関係を深め、一緒に音楽をつくり、音楽の喜びを分かち合ってきた。チックは亡くなってしまったが、そのスピリッツはますます輝き、今までチックと旅をしてきた仲間たちは、チックのスピリッツとともに音楽の旅を続けているのだ。

【マリンビストでカタリスト：ミカ・ストルツマン】

そしてチックが旅の途中で出会った大切な友人のひとりがミカ・ストルツマンだ。クラシックとジャズを縦横無尽に操る、ニュー・ジャンルのマリンバ奏者として益々幅広い演奏活動を展開しているミカ・ストルツマンは熊本県天草市出身。現在は夫のリチャードとともにボストンに在住し、ニューヨークを拠点に演奏活動を展開している。10回にわたるカーネギー・ホールでのリサイタルを含め、現在までに世界22カ国66都市で公演を行っている、日本を代表する国際的マリンバ奏者だ。 　そんなミカは、チックを初め、本作をプロデュースしているスティーヴ・ガッドそしてエディ・ゴメスらジャズ界のレジェンドたちとの共演で話題を呼んできた。多くの方々は、世界的なクラリネット奏者であるリチャードを通じて、レジェンドたちと知己を得たと想像するかもしれないが、ミカは実にオーガニックなかたちで自力でチャンスをつかみとってきたのだ。チックとの出会いは、楽曲解説で後述する通り、トロントでコンサートに足を運んだことがきっかけだし、スティーヴともやはりフェスティバルで偶然に出会っている。そうした出会いを大切に積み重ね、やがて彼らと音楽をつくるようになっていくだけではなく、ミカ自身がカタリスト（触媒）としてアーティストとアーティストを結びつけていくのだ。本作収録の「Japanese Waltz」での共演以来、およそ20年ぶりにチックとリチャードが再会するきっかけをつくったのもミカだったのだ。 　そのカタリストとして本領が発揮されたのが、まさにこのアルバムだ。ミカの声がけだからこそ、チックの盟友たちが集まり、スティーヴのプロデュースのもと、ミカの美しいマリンバが触媒となって、アーティストたちのチックへの思いをつないでいったのだ。

【希望のサウンド】

　私も幸運にも様々なプロジェクトを通じて、チックと一緒にお仕事をさせていただいた。当初こそ、レジェンドであるチックに恐れおののいていたけれども、やがて、気さくで明るく、ユーモアたっぷりでおちゃめなチックに、いつも勇気づけられ、励まされてきた。チックはいつも「自分の音楽でみんなを元気づけたい。それが自分のミッションだ」と語っていた。 　本作のレコーディング音源を聞いた瞬間、「チックのサウンドだ！」とすぐに思った。ミカがチックの友人たちとつくりあげたのは、元気づけられる「希望」の音楽。自身の音楽でみんなを元気づけることをミッションにしていたチックの音楽そのものだったのだ。 　チックと長年音楽の旅を重ね、チックの思いを心からわかっているメンバーだからこそ、つくることができたチックのスピリットそのもののサウンド。チックの音楽の火をますます明るく灯し続けるためにもぜひ堪能していただきたい。

【楽曲解説】
01: Armando’s Rhumba
チックの名盤『マイ・スパニッシュ・ハート』(1976)に収録された楽曲。最後のスタジオ・レコーディング・アルバム『ザ・スパニッシュ・ハート・バンド』(2019)にも収録されており、時代を超えて人気を集めるチック・コリア・ファンの定番曲だ。アルマンドはチックの父の名前（チックの本名もアルマンド・アンソニー・コリア）。実はミカはチックが亡くなる数ヶ月前に、この曲をマリンバで録音してチックに送っている。チックはこの布施威氏の編曲をとても気に入ったようだったが、ミカがチックと音楽をやりとりするのはそれが最後となった。
02: Crystal Silence
本ライナーノーツ最後のメッセージにもあるように、チックの妻、ゲイル・モラン・コリアがチックへの永遠の愛を込めて、ミカのマリンバ、リチャードのクラリネットとともに歌い上げる。 チックとゲイルにとってはとりわけ特別な楽曲だ。
03: Wigwam
ミカが初めてチックに会ったのは、留学先のトロントでチック・コリア＆オリジンのコンサートを見に行ったときだった。そのとき演奏されたのがこの「Wigwam」だった。ステージ上にマリンバが置いてあって、誰が弾くのか楽しみにしていたら、チックが弾き始めてびっくりしたそう。興奮したミカはチックにどうしても直接話したくて、サイン会の一番後ろに並んで最後まで待って、自身の初録音のCDを渡した。ミカがマリンバ奏者だということを知るとチックは、「マリンバは僕の一番お気に入りの楽器だ」と言い、ミカはいつかチックにマリンバの曲をつくってもらうことを夢に見はじめた。
04: Children’s Song No. 3&4
あるとき、ミカがチックの楽屋を訪ねると、「Children’s Song」の楽譜をプレゼントされ、この曲は編曲は必要ないので、この原曲をそのまま弾くようにと言い渡された。 マリンバで20曲ある全部を弾くのは難しいと語るが、少しずつ弾いていこうと思っているそう。
05: Chick’s Groove
このアルバムで唯一、チック・コリア以外のアーティストが作曲した楽曲。エレクトリック・バンド、アコースティック・バンドでずっと一緒に演奏してきたチックの盟友ジョン・パティトゥッチがチックへの思いを込めてこのアルバムの為に作曲した。
06: Marika Groove
2011年の大晦日にミカのもとにチックから楽譜が届いた。その半年前の６月のチックの誕生日には、ちょうどニューヨークで録音をしていたチック夫妻と仲間たちを招き、ミカは自宅でチックの誕生会を催し、手料理をふるまった。自宅に置いてあるマリンバでセッションをした後、帰りがけにチックが「君のために曲を書くから」と言ってくれたのだ。ただし「いつになるかはわからない」とも。 しかし、この年の大晦日に待望の楽譜が届いたのだ。チックはミカのマリンバ、スティーヴ・ガッドのドラムス、エディ・ゴメスのベース、リチャード・ストルツマンのクラリネットを想像しながら作曲したそう。本作品ではチックのイマジネーション通りのメンバーが揃った。
07: Birthday Song for Mika
ミカによるバッハのシャコンヌのCDを聴いたチックは感動し、ミカのためにマリンバのソロを書く約束をしてくれた。その後、偶然にも2019年6月12日にカーネギー・ホールでコンサートをすることになったミカは、その日がチックの誕生日であることを思い出し、そのときにこそチック作曲のマリンバソロを演奏したいとチックに頼んだところ、コンサートの３ヶ月前に楽曲が届いた。その後、チックのコーチをうけながら完成した楽曲をカーネギーのコンサートで初披露した。
08: Spain
チック・コリア & リターン・トゥー・フォーエヴァーによる『ライト・アズ・ア・フェザー』(1972)に収録された、いまやジャズスタンダードとなったチックの名曲中の名曲。ゲイル・モラン・コリアと、ゲイルがシスター・イン・ソングと呼ぶカレン・ネルソン・ベルが素晴らしいハーモニーを繰り広げる。
09: Japanese Waltz
今では伝説となった1985年のフェスティバルTOKYO MUSIC JOYでのチック・コリアとリチャード・ストルツマンによる貴重な音源がストルツマン家で発掘された。めったに休暇を取らないチックが1983年末から6週間、京都で休暇を過ごした際に作った楽曲。チックは日本の文化と人々をこよなく愛していた。 　最後に、このライナーノーツの「フィナーレ」としてチックさんのソウルメイトで最愛の妻、ゲイルさんから特別にメッセージをいただいた。チックさんとゲイルさんへの感謝とリスペクトの気持ちとともにみなさんとシェアしたい。

彼は素晴らしい特性をたくさん持っていましたが、そのひとつが「こどものような美しさ」でした。彼はいつも学び成長したがっていました。自分が他の人より勝っているなんて考えたことすらなかったと思います。
